Marriage Records for Genealogy
Marriage records can also be a great source of information. At a minimum, they will include the full names of the people being married, the date of the marriage, and the name of the person who performed the ceremony. Some marriage records will also include the ages and prior marital status of those being married, along with their birthplaces, places of residence at the time of the marriage and the names of their parents. The occupation of the groom may also be included. If you are are really lucky, the records may also list the parents of both the bride and groom. The county recorder or clerk is the source of marriage records in most states. More recent records are kept at the state level. The dates vary as to when states started keeping this information. A fee is generally collected for requesting this information. Whether you should contact the county or state depends on the when the state started keeping this information at the state level. Most government agencies will search only search a ten-year period for each request. If you do not know the exact year your ancestors married, it would be good to narrow the time period at much as possible before requesting a search.
